Bail is given to a person who has been arrested and placed in jail. It is a form of financial help that is given to that person as an exchange for them to return to court on a certain date. The financial help comes in the form of cash, assets or bonds. A bail bondsman is tasked with giving the money to the court and the court sets the bail amount. Here is more about how bail bonds themselves work.
When a person is put in jail a family member or friend can go to a bail bond agency and work with a bail bondsmen to get the money needed to release that person from jail. If they have the cash to do this on their own they can pay to do this without the help of the bondsman. Much of the time bail is thousands of dollars. This is not always a sum that friends and family have on hand for such an emergency.
The bail bondsman works like a loan officer in a way. They find out how much bail is needed for the release of the person in jail. They then loan the individual’s family or friends the money to provide for the release of the individual. The bail bondsman charges a fee of about 10 percent of the money they provide.
This fee is non-refundable even if the case gets thrown out of court. The people who are working to bail the person from jail will have to put up some form of collateral to back up the funds provided by the bondsman. This can be for example the mortgage on their home. The bondsman may also require 10 percent cash to cover the bond.
If the defendant does not show up for the trial, the bondsman has to work to find the person and bring him to jail. This is called bounty hunting but the bondsman usually hires a separate individual to do the work of tracking the individual down. The bondsman can sue the defendant for the money placed on their behalf if necessary.
While the bond is surety that the full bail sum will be paid, some courts will permit receiving a 10 percent down payment in exchange for the suspect’s release. If you have a need for a bail bond, you can obtain one anytime day or night. Bail bond agencies operate 24 hours a day.
